When he was a kid growing up in Long Beach, people talked about Tony Azevedo as having the potential to be a special water polo player. As he blazed a trail through a 16-year professional career and five Olympics appearances, he lived up to those expectations, becoming among the greatest water polo players in American history.

Now when people talk about Azevedo’s career, they’ll have to use the past tense: On Monday at a party at Legends, Azevedo, 35, confirmed he’s hanging up his Speedo and cap and retiring from playing.

“It was a tough decision,” said Azevedo, who was captain of the U.S. team in the 2016 Olympics in Rio and then finished out the last three months of 2016 playing professionally in Brazil. “I love the sport, I wanted to play — but in our sport you have to play overseas and it’s time to come home and be with my family. My wife and I just had our second baby and I didn’t get to see any of them for two months before the Olympics.”

Azevedo speaks three languages fluently and has lived in four countries throughout his professional career. As arguably the best player in the world, he was so famous in water polo-crazy Croatia that when he went out on the town, newspapers would write up what he was eating for dinner and how much wine he ordered. Azevedo and his family could have gone anywhere in the world, but are coming back to his hometown, having bought a house in Long Beach.

“It’s always been about coming home for me,” he said. “I’m not an O.C. guy and never will be, and L.A. is too hectic. Long Beach is the place.”

At Wilson, Azevedo and the Bruins were unbeatable, winning four straight CIF championships. Between high school and college, Azevedo made the first of his five Olympic appearances, in 2000 in Sydney. He then enrolled at Stanford, where he became the only player in history to win the Peter J. Cutino Award (for the NCAA’s top player) four times. Stanford won a pair of NCAA titles, with Azevedo leading the team in scoring.

After that, Azevedo played 16 seasons professionally, with one international magazine nicknaming him “The Savoir.”

“He became a great ambassador for the sport,” said Jeff Nesmith, Azevedo’s high school and college teammate who is currently the water polo coach at Wilson. “When I saw he was buying a house in Long Beach I was excited — he wants to come back and help.”

At Monday’s gathering of friends and former teammates and coaches, Azevedo emphasized that fact. There were dozens of youth players on hand to take photos and shake hands with him, and he told the gathered kids that they should feel free to come up to him and ask questions or advice.

“The dream wasn’t just to come back and live here,” he said. “I want to do something special—we’re going to bring international tournaments here to Long Beach. The main goal is to change the face of water polo in the United States.”

The event was hosted by Shore Aquatics, a local powerhouse youth aquatics club which was founded by Tony’s father.

“Tony is a great advocate for our sport,” said Chi Kredell, a fellow Wilson alum and 2000 Olympic teammate of Azevedo’s, who’s currently overseeing Shore. “He can do things for water polo that nobody else in this country can because of his reputation and his connections overseas.”

Monday, though, wasn’t about the future — it was about an appreciation of one of the great athletes in city history, and one of the all-time water polo greats worldwide. Only one player in world water polo history has more Olympic appearances than Azevedo (Manuel Estiarte of Spain has played in six). Looking back, he recalled being a ball boy for the 1996 US Olympic team, after which he sat down and wrote a list of 13 goals.

More than 20 years later, Azevedo achieved all of them but one: Winning an Olympic gold medal. He did lead the US to a silver in 2008, one of just three won by America since the sport’s first official appearance in the Olympics in 1920.

“Everything I did, I did with full passion,” Azevedo said. “There’s not one moment where I look back and say, ‘If only I could have trained harder that year.’ I helped to put the USA back on the map. I’m very proud, and I have no regrets.”
