Kunshan, China, May 28.— Canada, United States of America, Netherlands and Spain were first-day winners at the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League Super Final being played at the Kunshan Sports Centre on Monday.
In Group B, Canada opened proceedings with an 11-9 victory over Russia in a see-sawing match where the Canadians controlled the second half and their lead in the final four minutes.
Reigning champion United States of America survived a shaky start to fend off Japan 14-4 in what USA head coach Adam Krikorian stated was tough adjusting to Japan's "unorthodox style".
In Group A matches, Netherlands held off Australia 7-5 in a tight match where Dutch goalkeeper Laura Aarts was supreme. And Spain deflated China’s pride with an emphatic display in the night’s final encounter, winning 12-6.

Multi-gold- United States of America may be looking for more booty, but had trouble finding a rhythm in the opening quarter against Japan, before getting into stride and swimming away with the match. Japan was obstructive in the first quarter and matched USA all over the pool. However, once the floodgates opened, USA sent in a torrent of goals. Brigitta Games’ flash conversion of extra man showed that it was eager to put an ocean between it and Japan. Yumi Arima fired in from about five metres to score the last goal of the first half to make it just four in arrears. Japan tended to leave big gaps at centre forward with drives not timed well, something it will work on, no doubt, in later matches. While USA was adding to the bank of goals, Japan never gave up and was rewarded with a counter-attack goal through Akari Inaba late in the third for 12-4. USA’s better turning skills and quicker passing proved most beneficial, getting better as the match developed. Mel Seidemann showed her powerful two-metre skills with a powerful close-in shot, bouncing into the net. More pressure came from Japan in the final period, holding the powerful USA to just the two goals, Games netting a centre-forward lob (and missing out on a fourth when a team-mate committed a turnover foul as she was about to shoot). Games hails from Colorado, but plays in California.

Adam Krikorian (USA) — Head Coach
“The first game is always tough, especially against a team playing an unorthodox style. We took time to adjust but adjusted well after the first quarter. It was a lot closer than the score shows. Japan had a lot of good opportunities in front of goal. Japan is a dangerous team if you fall asleep.”
