Canada tie Hungary, France top Romania
With just 5 seconds on the clock John Conway (pictured) shot home his 3rd goal of the game as Canada tied Hungary 14-14 in a high goal-scoring contest completing a nice little comeback by the Canadians who scored the game's final two goals. And so saw Hungary head coach Tibor Benedek saw his team not able to beat the opponent, coached by his former longtime coach at Italian champion Pro Recco, Giuseppe 'Pino' Porzio, with whom Benedek celebrated numerous national and international titles in Italy.
As Canada captain Kevin Graham converted a penalty with under a minute remaining, the equaliser by Conway was the second goal in the final minute to stun the Hungarians. Both teams now lead group A of the Olympic qualification tournament after two days of action in Trieste, Italy.
In the same group France clinched a nice victory over Romania scoring two straight goals in the final period surviving the final minutes to edge Romania 11-12. Ugo Crousillat, on man up, and Igor Kovacevic hit subsequent shots for the French as they turned around an 11-10 deficit into the close but important win. Crousillat was on target scoring 5 goals for France who gained their first victory.
In other results the Netherlands added a 2nd win already beating Kazakhstan 5-8. A nice 0-3 start had the Dutch in the driver's seat and even allowed them to overcome a tough remainder of the match in which they held on to the 3-goal lead. Spain had a tough outing against Germany who hung on for 3 periods before Spain secured a 5-10 victory in the final quarter. Russia celebrated their first win proving too strong for Slovakia 7-4 while hosts Italy marched on rolling past South Africa 22-3 to now lead group B with the Netherlands.
