Romania in quarterfinals after draw with Russia
The decisive quarterfinal match-ups are set. On Friday the Olympic Qualification Tournament in Trieste will see the teams securing their tickets to Rio in just one do-or-die match. On Thursday the group stage was concluded and quarterfinals determined. Before the opening match both France and Canada knew what the standings in group B would likely look like. And so both were not too eager to battle as the winner of their match was to face Spain in the quarterfinals while the loser takes on the Netherlands. In the end Canada won the match 5-13 and will meet Spain for a spot at the 2016 Olympics while France meets the Netherlands once more.
A dramatic finish came in the day's 3rd match where Russia was eliminated by just a single goal. Daniel Teohari's equaliser, setting the final score at 8-8, meant Romania took 4th place in group A keeping their Olympic hopes alive although facing Italy in the quarterfinals means a daunting task is ahead.
In other results Hungary set up an expected quarterfinal meeting with Germany as the Hungarians defeated Slovakia 16-7 and Germany fell to Italy 12-6. Clear wins by the Netherlands (17-7 over South Africa) and Spain (16-4 vs. Kazakhstan) were expected and only confirmed the group's standings and thus the decisive quarterfinal match-ups.
